Product description

Background

This gene encodes a flavoprotein essential for nuclear disassembly in apoptotic cells, and it is found in the mitochondrial intermembrane space in healthy cells. Induction of apoptosis results in the translocation of this protein to the nucleus where it affects chromosome condensation and fragmentation. In addition, this gene product induces mitochondria to release the apoptogenic proteins cytochrome c and caspase-9. Mutations in this gene cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, which results in a severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. A related pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 10

Research target context

AIFM1apoptosis inducing factor mitochondria associated 1

View target guide

AIFM1 is apoptosis inducing factor mitochondria associated 1, encoding the mitochondrial apoptosis-inducing factor 1 (AIF). It is a mitochondrial flavoprotein with oxidoreductase activity that can also participate in caspase-independent cell-death pathways after release from mitochondria.

Biological function: AIFM1 functions as a mitochondrial NADH oxidoreductase and contributes to mitochondrial physiology. Following defined cell-death stimuli, apoptosis-inducing factor 1 can be released from the mitochondrial intermembrane space and translocate toward the nucleus, where it contributes to caspase-independent chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation.
