autophagy related 4B cysteine peptidase(ATG4B) Homo sapiens Autophagy is the process by which endogenous proteins and damaged organelles are destroyed intracellularly. Autophagy is postulated to be essential for cell homeostasis and cell remodeling during differentiation, metamorphosis, non-apoptotic cell death, and aging. Reduced levels of autophagy have been described in some malignant tumors, and a role for autophagy in controlling the unregulated cell growth linked to cancer has been proposed. This gene encodes a member of the autophagin protein family. The encoded protein is also designated as a member of the C-54 family of cysteine proteases. ATG4B (autophagy related 4B cysteine peptidase), also called cysteine protease ATG4B or autophagin-1, is an ATG4-family cysteine protease central to ATG8-family protein processing during macroautophagy.
Biological function: ATG4B is a peptidase family C54 cysteine protease that processes ATG8-family proteins, including LC3 and GABARAP family members, to expose the C-terminal glycine required for lipidation. It also removes lipid modifications from ATG8-family proteins, regulating autophagosome membrane dynamics and autophagic flux.
