Homologous DNA recombinase that catalyses strand exchange during meiotic recombination. Specifically required for meiotic recombination, facilitating the search and repair of DNA using the homolog rather than the sister chromatid, and can tolerate mismatches in heteroduplex DNA, unlike the higher-fidelity RAD51.
