BAX (BCL2 associated X, apoptosis regulator; apoptosis regulator BAX) is a pro-apoptotic BCL-2 family protein that controls mitochondrial outer-membrane permeabilization during intrinsic apoptosis. Biological function: BAX is a pro-apoptotic BCL-2 family effector. Under cellular stress it undergoes activating conformational changes, accumulates at the mitochondrial outer membrane and promotes membrane permeabilization, enabling cytochrome c release and downstream apoptotic signalling.
