Biological function

ACVR2A is a type II activin receptor with an extracellular ligand-binding domain and intracellular serine/threonine kinase domain. After ligand binding it forms receptor complexes with type I receptors; the type II receptor phosphorylates and activates type I receptors, which then propagate signalling through SMAD transcriptional regulators. Reviewed UniProt identifies activin A, activin B and inhibin A among its ligands.
