ALDH2 (aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 family member), also known as mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase, is a mitochondrial matrix enzyme that oxidises acetaldehyde and other aldehydes. Researchers use ALDH2 to study aldehyde metabolism, alcohol metabolism and mitochondrial responses to carbonyl stress.
Biological function: ALDH2 is the mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase isoform with low affinity constant for acetaldehyde and is localised to the mitochondrial matrix. It catalyses a major step in oxidative alcohol metabolism by converting acetaldehyde to acetate.
