Biological function

ATG3 is an E2 conjugating enzyme in the autophagy machinery. It catalyses covalent conjugation of ATG8-family proteins, including LC3 and GABARAP family members, to phosphatidylethanolamine-containing membrane lipids. ATG3 cycles between ATG7-mediated loading and the ATG12-ATG5-ATG16L1 E3-like complex to promote ATG8 lipidation and formation of autophagic isolation membranes.

ATG3 is studied in LC3/GABARAP lipidation, autophagosome formation, membrane curvature sensing and autophagic flux.
