Sie wird in Mastzellen exprimiert und soll am Abbau der extrazellulären Matrix, der Regulierung der submukosalen Drüsensekretion und der Generierung vasoaktiver Peptide beteiligt sein. Im Herzen und in den Blutgefäßen ist dieses Protein, anstatt des Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyms, weitgehend für die Umwandlung von Angiotensin I in das vasoaktive Peptid Angiotensin II verantwortlich.
