ALDH3A1 forms a cytoplasmic homodimer and preferentially oxidises aromatic and medium-chain saturated or unsaturated aldehydes to corresponding acids. This activity contributes to reactive-carbonyl detoxification and has been linked to protection against UV- and 4-hydroxynonenal-associated oxidative damage in the cornea.
