Product description

BAX plays a role in the mitochondrial apoptotic process. Under normal conditions, BAX is largely cytosolic via constant retrotranslocation from mitochondria to the cytosol mediated by BCL2L1/Bcl-xL, which avoids accumulation of toxic BAX levels at the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). Under stress conditions, undergoes a conformation change that causes translocation to the mitochondrion membrane, leading to the release of cytochrome c that then triggers apoptosis.

For research use only.

Research target context

BAXBCL2 associated X, apoptosis regulator

View target guide

BAX (BCL2 associated X, apoptosis regulator; apoptosis regulator BAX) is a pro-apoptotic BCL-2 family protein that controls mitochondrial outer-membrane permeabilization during intrinsic apoptosis. This catalogue-backed target record connects verified human BAX identity with Abmium research reagents.

Biological function: BAX is a pro-apoptotic BCL-2 family effector. Under cellular stress it undergoes activating conformational changes, accumulates at the mitochondrial outer membrane and promotes membrane permeabilization, enabling cytochrome c release and downstream apoptotic signalling. Its activity is regulated within the wider balance of pro- and anti-apoptotic BCL-2 family proteins.
