Le NPPB est un membre de la famille des peptides natriurétiques et code une protéine sécrétée qui fonctionne comme une hormone cardiaque. La protéine subit deux événements de clivage, l'un à l'intérieur de la cellule et un second après la sécrétion dans le sang. Les actions biologiques de la protéine comprennent la natriurèse, la diurèse, la vasorelaxation, l'inhibition de la sécrétion de rénine et d'aldostérone, et un rôle clé dans l'homéostasie cardiovasculaire. Une concentration élevée de cette protéine dans le sang est indicative d'une insuffisance cardiaque.
