La protéine de matrice oligomérique du cartilage est une protéine dont le gène est codé chez l'homme par le gène COMP. Les séquences de la COMP de rat et de bœuf indiquent qu'il s'agit d'un membre de la famille des gènes de la thrombospondine. Par analyse Southern blot d'un panel d'ADN d'hybrides de cellules somatiques et par hybridation in situ isotopique, le gène COMP humain a été cartographié sur 19p13.1, et le gène COMP murin a été cartographié sur la région centrale du chromosome 8 de la souris à l'aide d'un panel de cartographie par rétrocroisement interspécifique. La COMP est un marqueur du renouvellement du cartilage.
