Ce gène code un membre de la famille des pétraxines neuronales, protéines synaptiques apparentées à la protéine C-réactive. Cette protéine est impliquée dans la formation de synapses excitatrices. Elle joue également un rôle dans le regroupement des récepteurs de glutamate de type alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-méthyl-4-isoxazolepropionique (AMPA) au niveau des synapses établies, entraînant la mort cellulaire non apoptotique des cellules nerveuses dopaminergiques. La régulation positive de ce gène dans les tissus atteints de la maladie de Parkinson (MP) suggère que la protéine pourrait être impliquée dans la pathologie de la MP.
