La protéine encodée par ce gène est une molécule d'adhésion des cellules endothéliales qui interagit préférentiellement avec l'intégrine bêta7 du leucocyte LPAM-1 (alpha4beta7), la L-sélectine et VLA-4 (alpha4beta1) sur les cellules myéloïdes pour diriger les leucocytes vers les tissus muqueux et enflammés. C'est un membre de la famille des immunoglobulines et est similaire à ICAM1 et VCAM1. Au moins sept transcrits épissés alternativement codant pour différentes isoformes protéiques ont été trouvés pour ce gène, mais la nature pleine longueur de certaines variantes n'a pas été déterminée.
