Ce gène appartient à la famille des gènes homéotiques. Les gènes homéotiques codent une famille de facteurs de transcription hautement conservée qui jouent un rôle important dans la morphogenèse de tous les organismes multicellulaires. Les mammifères possèdent quatre groupes de gènes homéotiques similaires, HOXA, HOXB, HOXC et HOXD, qui sont situés sur des chromosomes différents et se composent de 9 à 11 gènes disposés en tandem. Ce gène est l'un des nombreux gènes homéotiques HOXC situés dans un groupe sur le chromosome 12. Le niveau de la protéine est contrôlé pendant la différenciation et la prolifération cellulaires, ce qui peut indiquer que cette protéine joue un rôle dans l'activation d'origine.
