Ce gène code une enzyme cytoplasmique de la voie de la transsulfuration qui convertit la cystathionine dérivée de la méthionine en cystéine. La synthèse du glutathion dans le foie dépend de la cystéine. Les mutations de ce gène entraînent la cystathioninurie.
