La protéine encodée par ce gène appartient à la famille de la calréticuline, dont les membres sont des chaperonnes liant le calcium, localisées principalement dans le réticulum endoplasmique. Cette protéine est également localisée dans la lumière du réticulum endoplasmique, cependant, sa capacité à lier le calcium peut être absente ou beaucoup plus faible que celle des autres membres de la famille. Ce gène est spécifiquement exprimé dans les testicules et pourrait être nécessaire à la fertilité du sperme. Une mutation de ce gène a été associée à la cardiomyopathie hypertrophique familiale.
