Ce gène code pour un membre de la famille des alcool déshydrogénases. Les membres de cette famille métabolisent une grande variété de substrats, y compris l'éthanol, le rétinol, d'autres alcools aliphatiques, les hydroxystéroïdes et les produits de peroxydation lipidique. La protéine codée forme un homodimère. Elle n'a pratiquement aucune activité pour l'oxydation de l'éthanol, mais présente une forte activité pour l'oxydation des alcools primaires à longue chaîne et pour l'oxydation du S-hydroxyméthyl-glutathion, un adduit spontané entre le formaldéhyde et le glutathion. Cette enzyme est un composant important du métabolisme cellulaire pour l'élimination du formaldéhyde, un irritant puissant et un agent sensibilisant qui provoque la lacrimation, la rhinite, la pharyngite et la dermatite de contact.
