Ce gène code un membre de la famille des glycérol-3-phosphate déshydrogénases NAD-dépendantes. La protéine codée joue un rôle essentiel dans le métabolisme des glucides et des lipides en catalysant la conversion réversible du phosphate de dihydroxyacétone (DHAP) et du nicotinamide adénine dinucléotide réduit (NADH) en glycérol-3-phosphate (G3P) et NAD+. La protéine cytosolique codée et la glycérol-3-phosphate déshydrogénase mitochondriale forment également une navette de glycérol phosphate qui facilite le transfert des équivalents réducteurs du cytosol vers les mitochondries. Des mutations dans ce gène sont une cause d'hypertriglycéridémie infantile transitoire. Des variants de transcrits épissés alternativement codant pour de multiples isoformes ont été observés pour ce gène. [fourni par RefSeq, mars 2012].
