L'acétylation des histones joue un rôle clé dans la régulation de l'expression des gènes eucaryotes. L'acétylation et la désacétylation des histones sont catalysées par des complexes multisubunitaires. La protéine codée par ce gène est un composant du complexe histone désacétylase, qui comprend SIN3, SAP18, HDAC1, HDAC2, RbAp46, RbAp48 et d'autres polypeptides. Ce complexe est actif dans la désacétylation des octamères d'histones centrales, mais inactif dans la désacétylation des histones nucléosomiques.
