Les hémidesmosomes sont des structures qui relient la lame basale au cytosquelette de filaments intermédiaires. Un composant fonctionnel important des hémidesmosomes est la sous-unité bêta-4 de l'intégrine (ITGB4), une protéine contenant deux domaines de fibronectine de type III. La protéine codée par ce gène se lie aux domaines de fibronectine de type III de l'ITGB4 et peut aider à relier l'ITGB4 au cytosquelette de filaments intermédiaires. La protéine codée, qui est insoluble et se trouve à la fois dans le noyau et dans le cytoplasme, peut fonctionner comme un facteur d'initiation de la traduction et empêcher l'association des sous-unités ribosomales 40S et 60S.
