Ce gène appartient à la sous-famille A/B des ribonucléoprotéines nucléaires hétérogènes (hnRNP) exprimées de manière ubiquitaire. Les hnRNP sont des protéines de liaison à l'ARN et elles forment un complexe avec l'ARN nucléaire hétérogène (hnARN). Ces protéines sont associées aux pré-ARNm dans le noyau et semblent influencer le traitement des pré-ARNm et d'autres aspects du métabolisme et du transport de l'ARNm. Bien que toutes les hnRNP soient présentes dans le noyau, certaines semblent faire la navette entre le noyau et le cytoplasme. Les protéines hnRNP ont des propriétés distinctes de liaison aux acides nucléiques.
