La protéine codée par ce gène catalyse la phosphorylation de la sphingosine pour former le sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), un médiateur lipidique ayant des fonctions à la fois intra- et extracellulaires. Intracellulairement, le S1P régule la prolifération et la survie, et extracellulairement, c'est un ligand pour les récepteurs couplés aux protéines G à la surface cellulaire. Cette protéine, et son produit le S1P, jouent un rôle clé dans la signalisation du TNF-alpha et la voie d'activation du NF-kappa-B, importantes dans les processus inflammatoires, antiapoptotiques et immunitaires.
