La protéine codée par ce gène appartient à la famille MYST des histones acétyltransférases (HAT) et a été initialement isolée comme une protéine interactive avec la protéine TAT du VIH-1. Les HAT jouent un rôle important dans la régulation du remodelage de la chromatine, de la transcription et d'autres processus nucléaires en acétylant les protéines histones et non-histones. Cette protéine est une histone acétylase qui joue un rôle dans la réparation de l'ADN et l'apoptose et est censée jouer un rôle important dans la transduction du signal. L'épissage alternatif de ce gène entraîne de multiples variants de transcrits. [fourni par RefSeq, juillet 2008].
