La protéine codée par ce gène appartient à la famille de gènes des protéines contenant un domaine SAC. Le domaine SAC, d'environ 400 acides aminés et composé de sept motifs conservés, a montré posséder une activité phosphoinositide phosphatase. L'homologue de levure, Sac1p, est impliqué dans la régulation de divers phosphoinositides et affecte diverses fonctions cellulaires telles que l'organisation du cytosquelette d'actine, la fonction de Golgi et le maintien de la morphologie de la vacuole. Les phosphoinositides liés à la membrane fonctionnent comme des molécules de signalisation et jouent un rôle clé dans le trafic vésiculaire dans les cellules eucaryotes.
