La protéine encodée par ce gène est une cytokine pléiotrope qui fonctionne comme un chimioattractant, un modulateur de l'activation des lymphocytes T et un inhibiteur de la réplication du VIH. Le processus de signalisation de cette cytokine est médié par le CD4. Le produit de ce gène subit un traitement protéolytique, qui produit deux protéines fonctionnelles. La fonction de cytokine est exclusivement attribuée au peptide C-terminal sécrété, tandis que le produit N-terminal peut jouer un rôle dans le contrôle du cycle cellulaire.
