Ce gène code un membre de la famille des kleisins, partenaires de la protéine SMC (structural maintenance of chromosome). La protéine se localise dans les éléments axiaux des chromosomes pendant la méiose chez les ovocytes et les spermatocytes. Chez la souris, la protéine homologue est un composant clé du complexe de cohésion méiotique, qui régule la cohésion des chromatides sœurs et la recombinaison entre chromosomes homologues.
