La protéine encodée par ce gène est une histone acétyltransférase (HAT) de type B qui est impliquée dans l'acétylation rapide des histones cytoplasmiques nouvellement synthétisées, qui sont à leur tour importées dans le noyau pour une déposition de novo sur les chaînes d'ADN naissantes. L'acétylation des histones, en particulier de l'histone H4, joue un rôle important dans l'assemblage de la chromatine dépendant de la réplication. Plus précisément, cette HAT peut acétyler l'histone H4 soluble mais non nucléosomique aux lysines 5 et 12, et à un degré moindre, l'histone H2A à la lysine 5.
