La protéine encodée par ce gène appartient à la famille des sulfotransférases 2. Elle est localisée dans la membrane de l'appareil de Golgi et catalyse le transfert de sulfate en position 4 des résidus N-acétylgalactosamine (GalNAc) non réducteurs dans les N-glycanes et les O-glycanes. Les groupes sulfate sur les glucides confèrent des fonctions hautement spécifiques aux glycoprotéines, aux glycolipides et aux protéoglycanes, et sont essentiels pour l'interaction cellule-cellule, la transduction du signal et le développement embryonnaire.
