Ce gène code un membre de la famille des filaments intermédiaires. Les filaments intermédiaires, ainsi que les microtubules et les microfilaments d'actine, constituent le cytosquelette. La protéine codée par ce gène est responsable du maintien de la forme cellulaire, de l'intégrité du cytoplasme et de la stabilisation des interactions cytosquelettiques. Elle est également impliquée dans la réponse immunitaire et contrôle le transport du cholestérol dérivé des lipoprotéines de basse densité (LDL) d'un lysosome vers le site d'estérification. Elle fonctionne comme un organisateur d'un certain nombre de protéines essentielles impliquées dans l'attachement, la migration et la signalisation cellulaire.
