La protéine encodée par ce gène est structurellement similaire aux récepteurs couplés aux protéines G et est fortement exprimée dans les cellules endothéliales. Elle lie le ligand sphingosine-1-phosphate avec une haute affinité et une haute spécificité, et est suggérée comme étant impliquée dans les processus qui régulent la différenciation des cellules endothéliales.
