La protéine encodée par ce gène est une glycoprotéine de surface cellulaire et une protéine membranaire de type I, initialement identifiée comme un marqueur spécifique des cellules myéloïdes. La protéine encodée était autrefois considérée comme un récepteur du C1q, mais on pense maintenant qu'elle est plutôt impliquée dans l'adhésion intercellulaire et dans l'élimination des cellules apoptotiques. La queue cytoplasmique intracellulaire de cette protéine s'est avérée interagir avec la moesine, une protéine connue pour jouer un rôle dans la liaison des protéines transmembranaires au cytosquelette et dans le remodelage du cytosquelette.
