Ce gène est un membre de la famille des transporteurs de solutés 2 (transporteur de glucose facilité) et code une protéine qui fonctionne comme un transporteur de glucose facilité régulé par l'insuline. En l'absence d'insuline, cette protéine membranaire intégrale est séquestrée dans les cellules des tissus musculaires et adipeux. Quelques minutes après la stimulation par l'insuline, la protéine se déplace à la surface de la cellule et commence à transporter le glucose à travers la membrane cellulaire.
