Contexte

La protéine codée par ce gène est une sous-unité catalytique de la protéine kinase activée par l'AMP (AMPK). L'AMPK est un hétérotrimère composé d'une sous-unité catalytique alpha et de sous-unités bêta et gamma non catalytiques. L'AMPK est une enzyme importante de détection d'énergie qui surveille l'état énergétique cellulaire. En réponse aux stress métaboliques cellulaires, l'AMPK est activée, et phosphoryle et inactive ainsi l'acétyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) et la bêta-hydroxy bêta-méthylglutaryl-CoA réductase (HMGCR), enzymes clés impliquées dans la régulation de la biosynthèse de novo des acides gras et du cholestérol. Des études sur l'homologue murin suggèrent que cette sous-unité catalytique pourrait contrôler la sensibilité à l'insuline de l'ensemble du corps et est nécessaire au maintien de l'homéostasie énergétique myocardique pendant l'ischémie.
