La protéine codée par ce gène appartient à la superfamille des petites protéines de choc thermique contenant un domaine alpha-cristalline conservateur dans la partie C-terminale de la molécule. L'expression de ce gène est induite par les œstrogènes dans les cellules de cancer du sein positives aux récepteurs des œstrogènes, et cette protéine fonctionne également comme une chaperonne en association avec Bag3, un stimulateur de la macroautophagie. Ainsi, ce gène semble être impliqué dans la régulation de la prolifération cellulaire, de l'apoptose et de la carcinogenèse, et des mutations dans ce gène ont été associées à différentes maladies neuromusculaires, y compris la maladie de Charcot-Marie-Tooth.
