Ce produit génique est une caractéristique des neurones cholinergiques, et les changements dans ces neurones peuvent expliquer certains des symptômes de la maladie d'Alzheimer. Les polymorphismes de ce gène ont été associés à la maladie d'Alzheimer et à un trouble cognitif léger. Les mutations de ce gène sont associées au syndrome myasthénique congénital lié à l'apnée épisodique.
