Ce gène code pour un composant de la prolyl 4-hydroxylase, une enzyme clé dans la synthèse du collagène, composée de deux sous-unités alpha identiques et de deux sous-unités bêta. La protéine codée est l'un des différents types de sous-unités alpha et constitue la majeure partie du site catalytique de l'enzyme active. Dans le collagène et les protéines apparentées, la prolyl 4-hydroxylase catalyse la formation de 4-hydroxyproline, essentielle au bon repliement tridimensionnel des chaînes de procollagène nouvellement synthétisées.
