Ce gène code une protéine transmembranaire putative hautement conservée. Une mutation dans l'orthologue murin de ce gène entraîne des transformations homéotiques postéro-antérieures du squelette axial, similaires au phénotype des mutants du gène murin homéobox C8. Il est proposé que ce gène fonctionne en aval de l'homéobox C8 pour transduire l'information de structuration extracellulaire lors du développement du squelette axial. Une variante de transcription épissée alternativement codant une isoforme substantiellement différente a été décrite, mais sa validité biologique n'a pas été déterminée.
