On pense qu'il joue un rôle dans la voie de présentation antigénique alternative utilisée par les cellules épithéliales corticales thymiques lors de la sélection positive des lymphocytes T. Le gène est situé dans le grand cluster de gènes d'histones sur le chromosome 6, près de la région du complexe majeur d'histocompatibilité (CMH) de classe I.
