Ce gène code une protéase spécifique de l'ubiquitine qui a été initialement identifiée comme un substrat du complexe ubiquitine ligase E3 de la protéine VHL (maladie de von Hippel-Lindau). En plus d'être ubiquitinée par le complexe ligase VHL-E3, cette enzyme déubiquitine le facteur 1 alpha inductible par l'hypoxie (HIF-1 alpha) et provoque ainsi une augmentation de l'expression des gènes ciblés par HIF-1alpha qui jouent un rôle dans l'angiogenèse, le métabolisme du glucose, la prolifération cellulaire et la métastase. L'enzyme codée par ce gène régule également la signalisation des récepteurs couplés aux protéines G en médiatisant la déubiquitination du récepteur adrénergique bêta-2 (ADRB2). Cette enzyme est une thiolestérase hydrolase exprimée de manière ubiquitaire. L'épissage alternatif entraîne plusieurs variants de transcrits codant la même protéine. [fourni par RefSeq, Jan 2013],
