Ce gène code pour une protéine de la famille des phosphatases acides à histidine. Bien qu'elle contienne un domaine de phosphatase acide à histidine, la protéine codée fonctionne comme une inositol pyrophosphate kinase, et on pense qu'elle est dépourvue d'activité phosphatase. Cette activité kinase est le mécanisme par lequel la protéine codée synthétise des inositol pyrophosphates à haute énergie, qui agissent comme des molécules de signalisation régulant l'homéostasie cellulaire et d'autres processus.
