C'est l'une des trois sous-unités qui constituent le composant 8 du complément (C8), lequel est composé d'un hétérodimère C8 alpha-gamma lié par des ponts disulfures et d'une chaîne bêta C8 associée de manière non covalente. Le C8 participe à la formation du complexe d'attaque membranaire (MAC) sur les membranes des cellules bactériennes. Alors que les sous-unités alpha et bêta jouent un rôle dans l'élimination bactérienne médiatisée par le complément, la sous-unité gamma n'est pas requise pour l'activité bactéricide.
