L'antigène CD8 est une glycoprotéine de surface cellulaire présente sur la plupart des lymphocytes T cytotoxiques qui assure des interactions cellule-cellule efficaces au sein du système immunitaire. L'antigène CD8, agissant comme corécepteur, et le récepteur des lymphocytes T sur le lymphocyte T reconnaissent les antigènes présentés par une cellule présentatrice d'antigène (CPA) dans le contexte des molécules MHC de classe I. Le corécepteur fonctionnel est soit un homodimère composé de deux chaînes alpha, soit un hétérodimère composé d'une chaîne alpha et d'une chaîne bêta. Les chaînes alpha et bêta partagent une homologie significative avec les chaînes légères variables d'immunoglobuline. Ce gène code les isoformes de la chaîne bêta du CD8. De multiples variants de transcription épissés alternativement codant des isoformes distinctes associées à la membrane ou sécrétées ont été décrits.
