Cette famille comprend plusieurs sous-types de récepteurs présentant une sélectivité pharmacologique différente, qui se chevauche dans certains cas, pour divers nucléotides d'adénosine et d'uridine. Ce récepteur fonctionne comme un récepteur de l'ATP et de l'ADP extracellulaires. Dans les plaquettes, la liaison à l'ADP conduit à la mobilisation d'ions calcium intracellulaires via l'activation de la phospholipase C, à un changement de forme des plaquettes et probablement à l'agrégation plaquettaire.
