Ce gène code une protéine contenant un motif à répétition tétratricopeptide et une boîte U qui fonctionne comme une ubiquitine ligase/co-chaperone. La protéine codée se lie et ubiquitine la protéine de choc cognate de 71 kDa (Hspa8) et l'ADN polymérase bêta (Polb), entre autres cibles. Les mutations dans ce gène causent l'ataxie spinocérébelleuse, autosomique récessive 16. L'épissage alternatif entraîne de multiples variants de transcrits.
