Ce gène code pour un membre de la famille des petits protéoglycanes riches en leucine (SLRP) qui comprend la décorine, le biglycane, la fibromoduline, le kératocane, l'épiphycane et l'ostéoglycine. Dans ces molécules bifonctionnelles, la partie protéique se lie aux fibrilles de collagène et les glycosaminoglycanes hydrophiles fortement chargés régulent les espacements interfibrillaires. La lumicane est le principal protéoglycane de sulfate de kératane de la cornée, mais elle est également distribuée dans les matrices collagènes interstitielles du corps. La lumicane pourrait réguler l'organisation des fibrilles de collagène et la croissance circonférentielle, la transparence cornéenne, la migration des cellules épithéliales et la réparation tissulaire.
