La protéine encodée par ce gène est un membre de la famille des protéines antioxydantes spécifiques au thiol. Cette protéine est une enzyme bifonctionnelle avec deux sites actifs distincts. Elle est impliquée dans la régulation redox de la cellule ; elle peut réduire le H(2)O(2) et les hydroperoxydes organiques à chaîne courte, les hydroperoxydes d'acides gras et les hydroperoxydes phospholipidiques.
