La protéine E1A de l'adénovirus active et réprime l'expression génique pour favoriser la prolifération cellulaire et inhiber la différenciation. La protéine codée par ce gène antagonise l'activation transcriptionnelle et la transformation cellulaire par l'E1A. Cette protéine partage une similitude de séquence limitée avec l'E1A et se lie à la fois au facteur de transcription général TBP et au suppresseur de tumeur pRb in vitro.
