Ce gène code pour un membre de la famille des peroxyrédoxines, des enzymes antioxydantes qui réduisent le peroxyde d'hydrogène et les hydroperoxydes d'alkyle. La protéine codée peut jouer un rôle protecteur antioxydant dans différents tissus dans des conditions normales et pendant les processus inflammatoires. Cette protéine interagit avec le récepteur 1 du peroxysome. La structure cristalline de cette protéine sous sa forme réduite a été résolue à une résolution de 1,5 angström. Ce gène utilise des sites d'initiation de traduction alternatifs en phase pour générer des formes mitochondriales ou peroxysomales/cytoplasmiques.
