Ce gène code une glycoprotéine intégrale de la membrane plasmique du foie, des cellules bêta des îlots de Langerhans, de l'intestin et de l'épithélium rénal. La protéine codée assure un transport bidirectionnel facilité du glucose. En raison de sa faible affinité pour le glucose, elle a été suggérée comme capteur de glucose. Les mutations de ce gène sont associées à une susceptibilité à des maladies, notamment le syndrome de Fanconi-Bickel et le diabète sucré non insulinodépendant (DNID).
